A Berry Causing Foodies To Lose Their Sh...

Well, I am just beside myself after learning of a berry that is akin to, possibly, food crack. This gorgeous, bulbous, voluptuous berry could unleash more power than the discovery of calorie free frosting. Well, maybe not, but still. I have GOT to get my paws on this berry. If I go missing, you may well find me in some back alley, gnawing on my last Miracle Berry - selling my womanly wiles to obtain more. What is this berry, you ask?

It's some wacked out berry,
featured in this NY Times article, and found in West Africa (probably right next to the hoodia plant!) that makes anything taste CRAZY good - as in, it can make beer taste like chocolate, Tabasco sauce taste like doughnut glaze! Apparently, it changes the way our palate perceives flavors - and folks are now having Berry Parties to experience and relish this little berry's delights. So, basically - I could make brownies of, say, Spam - and they'd taste like an Alice Medrich masterpiece? How joyously insane is that? Am I the only one who is positively crazy-gaga, with the drool-of-a-thousand-sleepers, to try this?

I'm reeling with possibilities over here - I fear insomnia is going to set in again, with just this one discovery, as I contemplate what I could do with this berry: cookies made of beans, a tartlet made of hominy, a layer cake made of lima beans - OH the psychological warfare I could play with myself using my own food revulsions. Your own food nightmares would taste heavenly! MOMS, consider the vegetables you could get those darn kids to EAT and LOVE!

I just can't think of a better experiential gizmo for partying away your Friday night. Jello shots? Forget it. Gather your neighbors, pop some berries, eat some gross food - and glorify in all the weird and wonderful tastes. I MUST order some of these little buggers and, at a later date, share what unfolds. I feel like I just discovered bubbles or something.

*Thanks to someone from YT for the tip and to Wikipedia for the picture.

Sounds like something out of Alice In Wonderland...I totally thought you were making this up to mess with our minds just for kicks but if *Wikipedia* says so then it must be true! I want some of these berries!

Depending on how much these little beauties cost, you could make every no-name food at Aldi's taste like something whipped up by Wolfgang Puck. And with what groceries cost these days that's saying a mouthful! :-)

Laura - it's in the NY Times - isn't it crazy? I want some too!

NV - EXACTLY! It's just nutty.

This IS crazy. I really want to try this and I'm not kidding. I clicked on the Times article and then there is another link where you can buy the berries, so I'm checking it out. Surreal.

How amazing is that? I could get my kids to eat vegetables! Oh, the joy! Wow.

That is really amazing. The video on the NY Times link is pretty cool too. I'd really like to try it. If you do try it, you absolutely must share the results!

This is seriously interesting and bizarre. I wonder what it would do to food that already tasted good?

It's like a Berry Rave party movement. Hysterical. That video was great, people were drinking vinegar after eating the berry!

Mary - let me know if you try it before I do!

Jennifer - I know, right?

Bethany - I will def. share if I try these, believe me. :)

Anon - I was wondering the same thing - what would it do if you tasted, say, cake?

Sarah - a Berry Rave, exactly!

I have simply GOT to get hold of some of these. Maybe then my BF (is a 56-yer-old, 450 pound redneck a "boy"?) will stop complaining about my pasta bakes.

He may think pasta tastes like italian caviar. LOL

Just read this and the Times link/video, just unbelievable. I need to have a Miracle Berry party like in the video, it looks like serious fun.

Chiffonade - love it, I would love to hear if you try these. :)

Mel - I totally agree - doesn't that party just look *fun*!??

I read about this, too, but I'm asking myself if I'm an alien or what, because I find the thought of making bad food taste good by eating a berry frightening! Maybe it's because I think the berry would taste sour, because I'm from Minnesota where finding sweet, ripe fruit is like...well, you've lived here Ann, what are the chances of finding a nice, ripe, not-picked-two-weeks-before-it's-ripe fruit in a Minnesota supermarket? Somebody try this berry and get back to me.

This is so bizarro. Who needs drugs when there are berries like this in the world?

I want to try it and eat sauerkraut which I find revolting. I think it'd be thrilling.

So you will be marketing it as "inlaws coming to dinner survival kit," eh?

I would!

Blessings!

firefly - You are SO correct on the suck-in-the-sides-of-your-cheeks fruit in MN! We have the same problem w/ grapes in AZ. I mean, who do I have to screw to get a sweet grape around here?

Belle - It could start a whole new "just say no" program, couldn't it?

Lacy - LOL - BRILLIANT!!!!!!!

Unfortunately, the NY times article exaggerated a bit about the fruit. It does indeed change the flavors of things, but I strongly doubt you'll be drinking tabasco sauce after having some. The link they gave in the NY times article is quite expensive, I found this site more reasonable: http://www.miraclefruit.co.uk/buy.html

Those prices include shipping, and it came pretty quickly to Canada. (about a week or so).

Lol, I saw that article too.
It can't be good for you.

wow!wow! can you believe I tried this fruit about 10 years ago?! My neighbor is a pilot and gets to travel around the world. He brought some home and invited my family over for the lemon test. I still tell the story to this day, but everyone thinks I'm either crazy or that I'm probably remembering a dream. Now I can refer them to wiki, nyt and your blog for proof, haha!

This really is one amazing berry; I tried the tablets of these. Got them from Miracle Fruit World and lemons really taste sweet:) You'll have fun! Enjoy

My parents actually grow these berries, but they become fruit very seldom throughout the year. However, when they do get ripe, we try these berries with whatever sour foods we have. For one hour this berry works its charm. Eat some kalamansi (or kumquat), lemon, or even warheads sour candy and they will all be sweet.
